Head of Trading-Jason Ow

If the saying, “Money never sleeps” is to be believed, we’re lucky to have the most watchful pair of eyes in the industry. Our Head of Trading and gateway to the intricacies of the Singaporean financial system, Jason Ow, has an uncanny ability to be online regardless of the timezone, at spotting trends in trading behaviour and offering unique solutions to difficult legal scenarios. He could be considered to be the Guardian Angel of the Marketplace.

“He is always online and responsive and like always 1 step ahead. Whenever we need to work with Singapore regulator (MAS), have some trading surveillance matters on the Marketplace or any other issue with trading — he has already thought about the solution. Jason is the answer to all Singapore regulatory and MAS related matters, he is our wikipedia and our gatekeeper.”

Based in Singapore, but having lived in London and Hong Kong, Jason found an early connection to Finance from his first job at a bank. During his career he’s worked with some of the largest names in the banking industry, from Citi to HSBC and Barclays. However Jason shares that his more recent experience was a key reason to him joining Funderbeam in May 2019, “I had a startup experience before, and in a way more smaller company and what I remember is that it was a fun and enjoyable environment.”

Drawn to the dynamic nature of smaller businesses he spends his days reviewing trading alerts, assisting the UK, Scandinavian, and Estonia based teams, and offering guidance on agreements and policies. All of this critical work is met with a smile and “happy to help” mentality enjoyed by the team around the world.

“We all know jokes about developers, accountants, lawyers and compliance. Half of these professions are the real cause of these jokes. Jason certainly represents the other half. He is interested in listening to the other opinions and takes this into account in his work. He helps to think along and seeks for different options to solve the business challenges. When colleagues from Europe visit the Singapore office, they can expect Jason to take them to exciting eateries.”

Being a foodie and cinephile, one of the few times Jason is offline is when he’s organised his favourite, dinner and movie. Outside of this he frequently visits Malaysia to spend time with friends and family. A self-confessed introvert, Jason shares how Estonia stole his heart, “I was really hoping to explore the country when I visited it so I was excited. I like it as it is slow paced. The most amazing experience was hiking in the bogs. I had never been in a place like this- it was so unique.” Now we just need to get him used to 20℃ being a ‘hot’ summer day 🙃. 

Jason is our lighthouse. Always on, guiding us and our investors away from potential rocky situations. As a result, he is a truly vital and cherished member of the team.

The Marketplace is operated as an organised market by VB Pte., in Singapore as a Recognised Market Operator (RMO) under the supervision of the Monetary Authority of Singapore. VBAS and VML are Trading Members of the RMO’s Marketplace. Access to the Marketplace for EEA and non-EEA clients is only provided by and through such clients’ service provider (ie VBAS or VML). The Marketplace does not provide services directly to investors outside Singapore.
